project: cbd lane built form review
client: melbourne city council
description of project
The CBD Lanes Built Form Review undertaken on behalf of the City of Melbourne aims to identify the key characteristics of Melbourne’s renowned lanes and determine built form, parameters that support the particular quality and sense of place of these important human places. The CBD Lanes Built Form Review seeks to protect the special qualities of the most valued lanes and give statutory force to the City of Melbourne to enforce responsive design and development within laneway settings where pedestrian and human activity is thriving.
The CBD Lanes Built Form Review was prepared in response to growing concern that inappropriate development is occurring within some of the city’s most intimate places that are not covered by Design and Development or Heritage Overlays. The study aimed at a series of rigorous height controls, built form design guidelines and treatments that ensure that new development reinforces lane amenity, connectivity and design quality.
