project: burwood heights activity centre structure plan
client: city of whitehorse
description of project
Burwood Heights is designated as a Major Activity Centre by Melbourne 2030. The activity centre is located around the corner of the Burwood Highway and Middleborough Road in Burwood and contains a mix of uses including an existing shopping centre, the RSPCA, leisure and residential.
The aim of this project was to prepare a structure plan for the activity centre which could provide an appropriate framework within which to realise a preferred future. Integral to this project was ongoing liaison with landowners, Council and the Priority Development Panel regarding a major re-development site in the form of a 20ha former brickworks in the middle of the activity centre. The former brickworks site represents a large driver of change within the centre and required careful management in terms of ensuring any development on the site is appropriately sited and designed to mitigate any off site amenity impacts, and does not impact on the existing retail hierarchy. A draft structure plan is currently being exhibited and the project will be finalised in early 2006.
