project: hastings anzac plaza
client: mornington peninsula shire
description of project
This project originated as one of the key elements of the Hastings Urban Design Framework previously completed by hansen. The design and documentation process included ongoing consultation with the Hastings RSL as the key project stakeholder.
The design allowed for the establishment of a defined public space around the existing memorial, suitable for ceremonial use and also to enhance the image and appearance of the memorial when viewed from High Street. The Plaza aligns with the central axis of High Street, providing an important visual attraction at the eastern end of the main street, with a vista to Westernport Bay maintained as a backdrop.
The design utilizes a number of robust materials, suited to the extremes of the maritime climate of the area, including exposed aggregate and off-form concrete, weathered hardwood and perforated aluminium in the form of a commemorative screen which contains Anzac imagery. The memorial itself is lit using inground uplights, and rows of Fig Trees encircle the plaza and will eventually frame views to the bay beyond.
