hansen ‾ in association with Richard Goodwin Architects ‾ was one of six short‾listed finalists for the Deakin University Melbourne Campus Burwood Interconnect Design Competition.

The competition brief called for a design solution which would provide an accessible pedestrian route between the two halves of the campus, located on opposite sides of Gardiner´s Creek. Designs were required to achieve a broad range of objectives, including equitable access, visitor experience, visual amenity, landscape, ecology and infrastructure requirements.

The design inspiration for our entry arose from our early investigations of the site as a natural corridor of eucalypt vegetation which bisects the campus. The form, colour and strength of the existing trees provided an immediate source of ideas and design opportunities. The design team resolved to focus on the notion of a fallen tree, providing a natural crossing point, as an appropriate design metaphor.

The design for the main structure, to be constructed of massive dynamic steel trunks, combines expressive complex geometry with logical functional needs. A concrete-tiled pathway is directly supported on a conventional steel frame. The colouring and patterning of the tiles is inspired by the mottled bark of the existing trees.

The design provides an innovative and technologically-advanced response which maintains a deep affinity with the natural environment.
